3.4: The Big Sleep

The Richard C. Battle Center housed Nebula City’s 1st Precinct, as well as the bulk of the bureaucracy that supported the entire police force. Portions of the heavily fortified structure had once been a prison, and before that a county courthouse had stood on the spot. As far as the records went back, the lot on which the Battle Center stood had always been used in the pursuit of justice in one form or another.

3.3: Clever Girls

The Owlery in Nebula City was one of the major hangouts for college students of an intellectual or artistic bent, as well as for high school students who wished to feel more mature, worldly, and cool than they actually were. Those who had never set foot inside it spread wild tales of illegal substance use and illicit encounters which supposedly took place among the many overstuffed bookshelves which filled most of the lower three stories of the old brick building, but the truth was both more and less exciting.

The museum’s parking lot was well-lit, even though it was past closing time. That wasn’t unusual, though. The security kiosk outside the parking lot was empty, but it looked unmanned rather than abandoned. The door was closed and locked and the lights were off. The big glass entrance doors were gated off, and there was no sign of anything disturbed within. The only indication that anything was amiss was the employee door propped open by a cinder block.

3.1: Working Girl II

A.C. Roman was a big blustering man in an ugly orange sweater and green corduroy pants. Evelyn Everett found that she loathed everything about him. Her eyes were closed to avoid unnecessary exposure to his garish sense of color. He’d been talking for a good fourteen minutes about the history of his family’s fishing company… its now immense fleet of ships and the related canneries and processing plants they owned… how many people they employed, men with families, and women, too… and how those people would be affected by the “disastrous” conditions that EvCo sought to force upon them.

3.0: Recent Events

Filed under: old — Alexandra Erin @ 9:53 am

At this point, we’ll take a break from our brief history of before time in order to acquaint you with some of the more recent events of this world we have been watching. If you are lucky enough to be a native of the world in question who has somehow found this narrative, you will probably find this installment somewhat tedious. You may find it a better use of your time to do a search for a popular brand of diet soda in conjunction with a popular brand of breath mints. The results are rather striking.

MF: Night And Day

The third annual Conference on Parahuman Participation in the Scientific Process had been held in Nebula City, hosted by the UNC science campus. This might have seemed an odd choice, given that most of the superpowered scientists in America were concentrated on the west coast, and indeed, the previous years’ conferences had been held at the DELPHI Institute of Crescent Bay. The end result was that nobody outside the tight-knit community of mutant researchers even noticed… it was like a slightly overcrowded faculty luncheon.

2.6 Answers And Questions

Filed under: old — Alexandra Erin @ 10:34 pm

A trio of slugs shot forth from between the twin rails of the gun-like projector with a barely audible hum and a woosh, sailing through the air at Allison at a speed just barely below that of sound. Allison couldn’t suppress a cringe at the sight, but her telekinetic shield stopped the bullets in mid-air… the first two as they would have whizzed past her ear, the third just before it would have slammed into her collarbone.

2.5 On Olympian Shores

Filed under: old — Alexandra Erin @ 10:30 pm

Despite her fatigue, that evening found Allison touching down lightly on the shores of Olympus Island, the world-famous headquarters of the Pantheon of Heroes. She wore her Mindfyre uniform, so she didn’t have to concern herself with the possibility that she might have been seen flying out across the bay and over the short stretch of open water beyond it. In fact, it was kind of thrilling to think somebody might have seen Mindfyre flying across the bay in the direction of the Pantheon.

2.4: Working Girl

Despite her earlier protestations, it was already pushing noon when Allison stepped off a CAT bus in front of the 1901 Building, home of Stan Glenn Images. She owned a car, but parking in the city was hard to come by and the Crescent Area Transit system was clean and efficient. There was a rail stop just up the road from her house that connected to the major bus lines. She enjoyed the morning commute, as it gave her a time to organize her thoughts for the day ahead… effectively shelving any “super business” until the ride home, when she could similarly put away her thoughts of layouts and color schemes.

2.3: Super Girl Talk

Filed under: old — Alexandra Erin @ 7:09 pm

At the end of her long night, Allison made her way back to the beachfront condo she shared with her roommate Amy, known to the world as Amphitrite, Goddess of the Waves. It took the last bit of her energy to fly herself to a secluded spot on the beach half a mile away, where she had a long coat stowed away in a waterproof bag.
