The bar seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. The reality was not far off: it was in western Oklahoma, along a nearly forgotten stretch of highway just a hair’s breadth north of the Texas border on the map.

The third annual Conference on Parahuman Participation in the Scientific Process had been held in Nebula City, hosted by the UNC science campus. This might have seemed an odd choice, given that most of the superpowered scientists in America were concentrated on the west coast, and indeed, the previous years’ conferences had been held at the DELPHI Institute of Crescent Bay. The end result was that nobody outside the tight-knit community of mutant researchers even noticed… it was like a slightly overcrowded faculty luncheon.

MF: Night Blooming Orchid
My name is Orchid Song. I’m an archeologist by trade and an adventuress by habit. Most of my work consists of legitimate scientific endeavors. It’s funded by an outfit called the Pandora Foundation… Pandora as in, ’s Box, as in that-which-should-not-be-opened. Ninety-five percent of my time is spent unearthing buried secrets. The other five percent is spent re-burying them. I could tell you stories… well, no I couldn’t. That’s kind of the point.
